ILI provides cultural orientation classes for new students during their first four weeks at ILI. These classes will introduce you to Canadian customs and practices and help you to develop better cross-cultural awareness. The sessions will also help you to better understand and communicate with both Canadians and other international students at ILI.
In addition to the initial orientation, ILI teachers regularly conduct workshops on such topics as finding an apartment in Halifax, Canadian traffic laws, Canadian universities, and application procedures for further academic study.
Counseling
Various members of the Registrar’s Office and the English department provide personal counseling to students, especially on matters related to their host family and living in a new culture.
Academic Advising
ILI’s Director of Studies and teachers can also help you to plan a future academic program. One staff member with a background in student advising and a vast knowledge of the Canadian university system regularly meets with students to help them plan future academic studies in Canada. She can help you to select a university and program of study and complete a university application.
