Unfurnished Apartments Print
Un-furnished apartments are ideal for long-term students who anticipate staying in Halifax for more than one year.

Rental rates vary in relation to the location and size of the apartment. Most unfurnished apartments include basic services (heat and hot water), but you will have to arrange for your own connection and bills for electricity, telephone, internet, and cable TV. A 'damage deposit' is usually required before the student arrives. The damage deposit is usually 50% of one month of rent, and is returned to the renter at the end of the rent period after an apartment inspection is conducted and if there is no damage to the apartment.

In addition to the damage deposit, the rent amount for the first month may also be required prior to the beginning of the rent period. Renters of unfurnished apartments are usually required to commit and sign a one-year lease. An unfurnished one-bedroom apartment may range in price from $700 to $1200 per month.

Most students who plan to stay in Halifax for more than one year arrive and live with a host family for a number of months first. During their stay with the host family, they take the opportunity to learn about the renting system of apartments in Halifax, locate second-hand furniture stores, and discover how services can be connected and how to pay their monthly bills.

Students do not normally seek ILI for help to arrange unfurnished apartments. However, ILI can help students by providing them with direction to where they can find apartment listings and renting information. Please note that your rent and damage deposit may be required more than one-month before you arrive to Halifax.
